Welcome Center

On top of serving local residents, the new Library and Community Center will also be a welcoming center to the thousands of visitors to the region each year. Patten is one of the main stops on the way to both the northern entrance of Baxter State Park and Katahdin Woods and Waters (KWW) National Monument. With the opening of the Tekakapimak Contact Station at KWW in 2025, it is believed that visitation to the region will increase significantly.

We are also seeing locally, a major increase in the use of our motorized (ATV and snowmobile) and non-motorized (bike, cross country ski, and snowshoe) trails in Patten and the region. With the recent opening of Peavey Brook Outdoor Center (PBOC) at 865 Shin Pond Road in Patten, residents and visitors will be able to access outdoor equipment to enjoy the ever growing series of trails and outdoor opportunities in the region.

PBOC is run through the Outdoor Sports Institute (OSI) in partnership with local volunteers and libraries across the Katahdin Region. The Library and OSI are collaborating to offer outdoor gear and equipment to visitors and community members. Great news: if you’re a cardholder at any Katahdin Region library, simply bring your library card with you at your first rental—your rental is included as part of your library benefits.

Libraries include:

Our new facility, located right on Main Street in Patten, will be poised to be a welcoming gateway to the region, offering everything from high speed internet access and coworking space, to cultural and educational experiences for the community and visitors alike. Our goal is to not only welcome visitors to the region, but give them a reason to stay.
